Necessity is what drove David T. Smith to build his first furniture pieces. As a newlywed with no money to spare, it was the only way Smith could furnish a home for his wife, Lora. When Smith's father, Ray, loaned him a table saw, some hand tools and a few hundred feet of cherry planking, the tables, quite literally, began turning for the industrious new husband. |

It all started when David went to an antique auction and, on his father's advice, paid $11 for a vintage table. After he repaired it and cleaned the finish, an antiques dealer offered him $350 for the piece. Smith refused the sale but started a part-time business restoring antiques. Before long, dealers and individuals brought worn and broken furniture for him to make whole again.
The business became The Workshops of David T. Smith, a Morrow, Ohio facility where a cadre of craftspersons work to Smith's rigorous standards to create reproductions of historical furniture, pottery, carvings, ironware and 18th and 19th century household and decorative items. Along the way, Smith received an intense education in American furniture design, construction and finish, which he painstakingly applies to each and every piece he produces. | |
